The Kerry schools competition was held on 20th October 2015 at Ballyseedy Woods; Tralee; Co.Kerry.
472 students took part in the
recent competition. The first year
students from nine schools in the county participated in the event which was
run by Cappanalea OETC and was part of the wider Kerry ETB physical education
Rich Task Initiative.
All students had completed a six
week module of orienteering as part of their school based physical education
programme. Evidence of their prior
training and proficiency could be seen in through the low number of
non-finishers on the day.
There were three courses set out
for the event, all of equal distance and difficulty. The courses were graded at beginner “Orange”
category and were 1.8km in length.
Students were randomly assigned to one of the three courses and for the
most part ran in pairs.
The three course winners were:-
·
Michaela Harrington & Rhys Keane - (Causeway
Comprehensive School)
·
Robert Njie and James Njie - (Killarney
Community College)
·
Cian O’Sullivan & Gearoid Quilter –
(Causeway Comprehensive School)
The overall school trophies which
were based upon the finishing position of their top seven participants from
each school, were awarded to:-
·
Colaiste na Sceilig (Cahirciveen) in the ETB
category and
·
Presentation Convent Listowel in the Secondary
schools category.
All students participating in the
event were praised for their good behaviour; their positive sporting attitude
and for the respect shown towards the environment. The success of the event is a reflection of
the hard work and dedication of the physical education teachers involved.
