Leinster Schools Orienteering Championships 2010 - Primary
Date: Wednesday 14 April 2010
Venue: Carrigolligan Forest, Kilternan, Co Dublin

As Orienteering is now on the curriculum for primary students, why not enter
get your school to enter in the above event? All the hassle and time of
organising the event is done for you. Experienced orienteers plan the
courses, using international standard orienteering maps and run the event to the highest standards.

SportIdent electronic timing equipment is used,
which gives the competitors their result as soon as they finish.

Entries are now being taken for the event. All schools in Leinster can
enter. Although it is a Leinster Championships, it is organised the very
same as any league event and can be entered just as a once-off event. A
Beginners course is offered for any new school, if they wish to do that.
This is a very simple, short course, to introduce the participants/teachers
to schools orienteering events for the first time, where they can
familiarise themselves with the map, the start/finish setups, electronic
timing, etc. Otherwise, competitors can be entered in their appropriate
category. Categories offered are:-
5th Class Girls
5th Class Boys
6th Class Girls
6th Class Boys
Beginners

Maps in resealable bags will be pre-marked with the course and control
descriptions. All courses will be planned according to the age and
experience of the competitors.

Carrigolligan is located near Kilternan, Co. Dublin. The area may be
recognised by the tall, granite chimney which is visible from afar, which
was built for leadmine works there in days gone by. Lead mining and
smelting took place at the Ballycorus lead mine in the early 19th Century
and continued until it was closed in the 1920’s. There is a large forest
road network, which will be used for all courses. Excellent views can be
enjoyed from Carrigolligan of the whole of Dublin - Bray and the bay area.
Mountains to be seen include Three Rock, Djouce, Sugarloaf, Little
Sugarloaf, Bray Head. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Mourne Mts
and Snowdon Mt in Wales!! Hopefully competitors can steel themselves
against this rush of distractions and concentrate on the job in hand -
navigating efficiently around their course.
